10/19/2009 - EM Volleyball Team Wins Final Two Corner Games
East Mills won its final two Corner Conference games last week, topping South Page 3-0 Tuesday and Hamburg 3-1 on Thursday to finish the regular season with a 3-6 record, 5-17 overall. The Wolverines will face No. 4 and 30-3 Treynor in the first round of Regional play Wednesday at 7 PM at Treynor.

In Thursday night's action at Hamburg, the Wilcats took the first game 26-24 before East Mills rolled off three straight close wins, 25-23, 25-22 and 25-20.

Gabbi Sowers set a new single-season record for digs with 221, topping the old mark of 217 set by Cassie Kadel. Sowers also sparked East Mills in the crucial third game with seven consecutive serves that turned an 18-13 deficeit into a 20-18 lead. Sowers finished the match with four ace serves.

"Our serve receiving was phenomenal and our hitting efficiency was the best of the season," said East Mills Coach Connie Blank. "The girls stayed focused and fought hard every play. We are finally putting it all together as a team."

Amy Walker led the offense with 25 assists, which tied her school record for assists in a match. Walker also had 10 digs, six kills, a block assist and four aces. Jordan Jennings added 10 assists, two digs and served 17-of-18 with two aces.

Jensen Duysen upped her season and career high with 18 kills, and also added 11 digs and served 8-of-9 with an ace. Gab Roenfeld and Gillian Anderson each had six digs, Dani Paulsen hit a perfect 13 serves with three aces, and Jayme Lynn added two blocks and five kills.

In Tuesday night's sweep of South Page the Wolverines set a milestone of sorts. For the first time in the school's short history all three teams (freshman, JV and varsity) won every game.

Duysen had 15 kills, seven digs and a perfect 14-of-14 from the service line with one ace. Walker had six kills to go with her team-high 14 assists, eight digs and three aces. Shelby Sommerla added five kills and five digs; Jennings had eight assists, three digs and served 14-of-15 with two aces. Sowers led the defense with 12 digs and six ace serves.
