- Essex defeats Sidney 44-22 in Varsity FB
The Essex Trojans started fast and ended fast and earned a hard fought 44-22 road win over the Sidney Cowboys. Essex scored on their 1st two possessions as Adam Maher had TD runs of 10 and 2 yards. Sidney countered with a 57 yard TD pass from Brent Travis to Joel Magel. Essex had a chance to take a commanding lead on their next two possessions but they fumbled on the Sidney 5 and were stopped on downs after having a 1st and goal from the 3. They did score on their next drive as Jeremy Burns ran in from 3 yards out to take a 18-6 lead. Sidney scored on a Jake Gandy 14 yard run with 3:33 to go in the half. On the ensuing kickoff Jayde Duysen ran it back for a Trojan TD. Sidney ended the scoring in the 1st half with 1:59 to go as Brent Travis hit Jake Gandy for 49 yards and Essex led at the half 24-22.
On the 1st drive of the 2nd half the Cowboys dropped a pass that would have went for a TD and then after marching the ball down to the Essex 4 where they had 1st and goal they couldn't score.
With 10:47 left in the 4th Tom Slater ran in from 1 yard and on their next possession Cliff Holmes scored from 36 yards out. In the last 7 minutes of the game Sidney dropped another long TD pass and couldn't score again when they had 1st and goal this time form the 7. Essex finished the scoring on a beautiful bootleg QB keeper by Jeremy Burns that covered 55 yards with 1:22 left.
For the game Essex had 362 yards rushing and 68 passing for a total of 430. Sidney had 170 rushing and 106 passing for a total of 276.
Individually for the Trojans Adam Maher had 167 yards rushing on 25 carries and 2 TD's. Jeremy Burns had 90 yards on 6 carries and 2 TD's. For the Cowboys Jake Gandy had 131 yards on 28 carries.
Essex will host Fremont-Mills this Friday and Sidney will travel to Farragut. |
